Sensitive Cargo
Goods that—due to batteries, magnets, liquids/powders, brand or clearance risk—require restricted channels and surcharges, sitting between general cargo and dangerous goods.
Sensitive Cargo is a commercial classification used by forwarders and dedicated-line carriers (not an official transport-law term). It covers goods that may not legally be dangerous goods but are restricted by carriers or destination countries for safety, customs-clearance or compliance reasons. Typical items include products with built-in or accompanying batteries, magnetic items, liquids/powders/pastes, branded or replica goods, food/drug/cosmetics, and categories heavily inspected at destination. Such cargo usually moves only on designated sensitive-goods channels and incurs a sensitivity surcharge.
FAQ
- Can sensitive cargo go via standard express?
- It depends on the exact attribute and channel policy. Some sensitive cargo (e.g. battery products) can use certified specialized channels, but usually with a surcharge and limited routing; replica or prohibited items are refused by all compliant channels. Always declare honestly and confirm with your forwarder before booking.
- Why do forwarders quote so differently for the same shipment?
- Because 'sensitive' is a commercial judgment, not a unified regulation—channels differ on surcharges, accepted categories, and whether duty/clearance is included. A lower quote often carries higher inspection or seizure risk. Compare total landed cost on a like-for-like compliance basis, not the headline rate.
